갤러리 팩토리에서는 2007년 2월 21일 (수)부터 3월14일 (수) 까지 작가 딘 모스 Dean Moss를 초청, 그의 개인전 영상 작업 전시 < Spooky action at a distance >를 소개한다.

딘모스는 시각예술과 공연예술을 결합한 실험적인 비디오아트 분야의 권위자로서, 지난 15년간 뉴욕을 중심으로 전시 및 공연활동을 활발히 하고 있는 비디오 작가이자 현대 실험무용가이다. 현재 뉴욕의 복합 예술 공간, The Kitchen의 프로그램 디렉터이기도 한 그는 이번 전시에서 퍼포먼스를 바탕으로 한 일련의 비디오 작업을 전시한다. 이미 미국을 비롯하여 일본 및 인도네시아, 프랑스 등의 전시 및 공연을 통해 국제적으로 활동 영역을 넓히고 있는 작가는 이번 전시와 동시에 진행되는 워크샵을 통해 공연예술영상분야의 한국 작가들과도 국제교류의 틀을 다지려 한다. 감각과 개념이 충돌하는 교차점을 관찰하는 것에서 시작되는 그의 작업은 퍼포먼스, 사운드, 또는 이미지로 변환되어, 움직임에 의한 하나의 완성된 건축물, 즉 “움직임을 시각화” 한 비디오 작업으로 표현된다. 작품은 VHS 와 DVD, 두 가지 버전으로 전시되며 비디오 프로젝터와 모니터를 사용하여 영상작업이 설치된다. 전시 관람객은 헤드폰을 착용한 상태에서 작품과 사운드를 동시에 감상하게 된다.

Gallery Factory introduces the exhibition <Visualizing Movement> by the artist Dean Moss from February 21st to March 14th. This exhibition explores the intersection of visual and performance art through public workshops with Dean Moss and the exhibition of several of his media works that represent a survey of his fifteen year practice integrating video with performance. The workshop will include lectures on the history and techniques of his work, the processes of his collaborations and will incorporate hands-on instruction for advanced students and artists.

The works are either projected, wall mounted or set on pedestals. Only the work, "Hitting video" is set alone, separated from the others and projected on a wall with a speaker. The other works can be screened on similar sized monitors mounted in various positions on pedestals and shelves. The work,"My novel" is on VHS and the others are on DVD. All the works have sound ,so the viewers use headphones.

Dean Moss 약력

딘 모스_Dean Moss는 뉴욕을 중심으로 퍼포먼스 및 비디오 작업을 선보이고 있는 예술영상 작가이다. 현재 뉴욕의 복합 예술 공간 The Kitchen의 디렉터이기도 한 작가는, 2006 년 메사추세츠 현대미술관_Massachusetts Museum과 앤디워홀 뮤지엄_Andy Warhol Museum등에서의 개인 전시를 비롯하여 다양한 전시 공간에서 활발한 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 근래에는 한국(Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture,2005)과 일본(Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music2003-2004, Session House2003)에서 객원 교수 및 큐레이터로 활동한 바 있으며, 또한 인도네시아 발리_Bali Purnati Center for the Arts 2006내의 레지던시를 통해 아시아 내에서의 활동 영역을 넓히고 있다. 그의 비디오작업은 The Kitchen Video Collection과 Third World Newsreel에서 소장되어 있기도 하다.

Dean Moss is the one of the most respected artists in the experimental video art as well as in performance-based video art and he is currently working as a program director at the multi-art-space, The Kitchen in New York. For the past 15 years, He has exhibited many of his works nationally and internationally in US, Europe, and Asia.
His work starts in examining sensations and ideas that are often contradictory and simultaneous. It represents an environment in which he frames an internalized particular world. Later, in performance, it becomes an additional way to incorporate outside elements, multiple layers and alternative viewpoints. Now, through its complete assimilation into his thinking and practice it becomes environmental again, but simultaneous in its intimacy and distance. He says, "Video for me, with its relationship to both intimate shadow and world wide image consumption, is a natural.”
